Sawan Somwar 2026: Puja Vidhi, Muhurat, Mantras and Powerful Remedies

The sacred month of Sawan, also known as Shravan or Shravana, is considered one of the most spiritually significant periods for the worship of Lord Shiva. Devotees offer water to the Shivling, chant Shiva mantras, observe Monday fasts and engage in prayer, meditation and charity.

Mondays falling during this holy month are known as Sawan Somwar or Shravan Somwar. Many devotees observe a fast on these days to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings for inner peace, health, marital harmony, spiritual growth and relief from obstacles.

In 2026, the dates of Sawan Somwar differ across India because different regions follow different lunar-calendar systems. North Indian states generally follow the Purnimanta calendar, whereas Maharashtra, Gujarat and several southern states follow the Amanta calendar.

Devotees should follow the dates applicable to their location and family tradition. Local sunrise, sunset and puja timings may also vary from one city to another.

Sawan Somwar 2026 Puja Muhurat

There is no single clock-based Sawan Somwar puja time applicable throughout India. Sunrise and sunset vary by city, and local Panchang calculations should be followed for precise timings.

The following periods are traditionally considered suitable for Shiva worship:

Brahma Muhurta

Brahma Muhurta, the peaceful period before sunrise, is suitable for meditation, mantra chanting and taking the Sawan Somwar vrat sankalp.

Morning Puja

The principal Sawan Somwar puja may be performed after sunrise, preferably after bathing and wearing clean clothes. This is a convenient period for:

  • Shivling Jalabhishek

  • Panchamrit Abhishek

  • Offering Bilva leaves

  • Reciting Shiva Chalisa

  • Chanting Om Namah Shivaya

  • Performing Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha

Pradosh Kaal

Pradosh Kaal is the period around sunset and is traditionally associated with Lord Shiva’s worship. Devotees who cannot perform an elaborate morning puja may offer water, light a lamp and chant Shiva mantras during the evening.

For exact city-specific timings, a local Panchang should be consulted because Hindu festival calculations are based on local sunrise and other geographical factors.

Significance of Sawan Somwar

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva is believed to be especially receptive to sincere devotion during the month of Sawan. The name Ashutosh, often used for Lord Shiva, means one who is easily pleased by pure and uncomplicated devotion.

Sawan Somwar worship is traditionally observed for:

  • Inner peace and emotional stability

  • Spiritual discipline and purification

  • Harmony between married partners

  • Blessings for a suitable life partner

  • Strength during difficult situations

  • Relief from fear and negative thinking

  • Family happiness and prosperity

  • Greater devotion and self-awareness

These benefits belong to the domain of religious faith and spiritual tradition and should not be interpreted as guaranteed material outcomes.

Sawan Somwar Puja Samagri

The following items may be arranged before beginning the puja:

  • A Shiva idol, photograph or Shivling

  • Clean water

  • Gangajal, when available

  • Raw milk

  • Curd

  • Honey

  • Ghee

  • Sugar or mishri

  • Bilva or Bel leaves

  • White flowers

  • Seasonal fruits

  • Sandalwood paste

  • Akshat or unbroken rice

  • Incense

  • Cotton wick and ghee lamp

  • Rudraksha mala

  • White cloth

  • Prasad

  • A clean vessel for Abhishek

An elaborate collection of materials is not compulsory. Even a simple offering of clean water, Bilva leaves and sincere prayer is traditionally considered meaningful.

Complete Sawan Somwar Puja Vidhi

1. Clean the puja space

The place of worship should be cleaned before beginning the ritual. The altar may be arranged with an image of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Nandi.

2. Take a bath and wear clean clothes

The devotee may bathe early in the morning and wear clean, comfortable clothes. White, yellow or other light-coloured clothing is commonly preferred, although no particular colour is compulsory.

3. Take the vrat sankalp

Sit quietly, join both hands and mentally state the intention behind the vrat.

A simple sankalp may be:

“On this sacred Sawan Somwar, I observe this vrat and worship Lord Shiva with sincerity. May this practice bring wisdom, peace, purity and strength into my life.”

The prayer should be offered without wishing harm upon another person or attempting to control someone’s free will.

4. Worship Lord Ganesha

Begin by remembering Lord Ganesha and requesting the removal of obstacles.

Chant:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः।
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.

It may be chanted 11 or 21 times.

5. Meditate upon Lord Shiva

Close the eyes for a few moments and visualise Lord Shiva seated peacefully on Mount Kailash. The mind may be focused on compassion, detachment, courage and inner stillness.

6. Perform Jalabhishek

Slowly pour clean water or Gangajal over the Shivling while chanting:

ॐ नमः शिवाय।
Om Namah Shivaya.

The water should be offered respectfully without rushing or wasting large quantities.

7. Perform Panchamrit Abhishek

Panchamrit is traditionally prepared using:

  • Milk

  • Curd

  • Honey

  • Ghee

  • Sugar or mishri

Each ingredient may be offered separately in a small quantity. The Shivling should then be cleansed with clean water.

Panchamrit Abhishek is optional. A simple water Abhishek is sufficient when Panchamrit is unavailable or when temple rules restrict other offerings.

8. Offer Bilva leaves

Offer three-leaf Bilva leaves with the smooth side facing upward, following the local family or temple tradition.

Chant:

त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रियायुधम्।
त्रिजन्मपापसंहारं बिल्वपत्रं शिवार्पणम्॥

Tridalam Trigunakaram Trinetram Cha Triyayudham,
Trijanma Papa Samharam Bilvapatram Shivarpanam.

Meaning: “I offer this three-leaf Bilva to Lord Shiva, whose form represents the three qualities, three eyes and three divine powers.”

9. Offer flowers and other puja items

Offer white flowers, sandalwood, fruits, incense and a lamp. Only fresh and clean offerings should be used.

Temple rules should always be respected. Certain temples may not allow devotees to touch the Shivling or offer milk, flowers and other materials directly.

10. Chant Shiva mantras

At least one Shiva mantra may be chanted 11, 21 or 108 times. The number is less important than concentration, sincerity and regularity.

11. Read Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha

Devotees may read or listen to the traditional Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha. Alternatively, Shiva Chalisa, Rudrashtakam or selected verses from Shiva-related scriptures may be recited.

12. Perform Shiva Aarti

Conclude the puja with Lord Shiva’s aarti:

Om Jai Shiv Omkara

After the aarti, pray for wisdom, forgiveness, peace and the welfare of all beings.

13. Distribute Prasad

Offer fruit, Panchamrit or another sattvic preparation as Prasad. It may be shared respectfully with family members or devotees.

Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.

Meaning: “We worship the three-eyed Lord who nourishes all beings. May we be liberated from fear, suffering and bondage, just as a ripe fruit separates naturally from its stem.”

The mantra may be chanted 11, 21 or 108 times for spiritual strength, courage and healing prayers. It should complement—not replace—professional medical care.

3. Rudra Gayatri Mantra

ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महादेवाय धीमहि।
तन्नो रुद्रः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om Namah Shivaya, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and Rudra Gayatri are among the commonly recited mantras associated with Lord Shiva’s worship.

Powerful Sawan Somwar Remedies

The following remedies are based on traditional spiritual practices. They are intended to strengthen prayer, discipline and positive intention rather than guarantee a particular outcome.

Remedy for mental peace

Offer clean water to the Shivling while chanting Om Namah Shivaya 108 times.

After the chanting, sit quietly for five minutes and practise slow breathing. Pray for clarity rather than attempting to force an immediate solution.

Remedy for health and spiritual strength

Perform a simple water Abhishek and chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 21 times.

A prayer may also be offered for healthcare professionals, caregivers and anyone experiencing illness. Spiritual practice should accompany appropriate medical treatment, not replace it.

Remedy for marriage and relationship harmony

Offer water and white flowers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Chant:

Om Gauri Shankaraya Namah

Married partners may perform the prayer together. The intention should focus on mutual respect, communication and emotional maturity.

Unmarried devotees may pray for a compatible and respectful partner rather than attempting to attract one specific person against their wishes.

Remedy for career growth

Offer three clean Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva. On each leaf, mentally surrender one quality that may be blocking progress, such as:

  • Fear

  • Confusion

  • Procrastination

Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times and commit to one practical professional action on the same day, such as completing an application, improving a skill or contacting a relevant person.

Remedy for financial stability

Perform a simple Jalabhishek and offer a sattvic food item in charity. Pray for wisdom in earning, saving and using money responsibly.

The spiritual practice may be combined with practical steps such as:

  • Reviewing expenses

  • Avoiding unnecessary borrowing

  • Creating a repayment plan

  • Building an emergency fund

  • Seeking qualified financial advice where required

Remedy for debt-related stress

Offer water to the Shivling while mentally surrendering fear and anxiety. Chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 11 times, followed by Om Namah Shivaya 108 times.

Where accepted within local tradition, a small quantity of black sesame may be offered separately or donated. Excessive materials should not be poured into temple drainage systems.

The ritual should be followed by a realistic debt-repayment plan. No spiritual remedy should be presented as a guaranteed way to erase debt without practical action.

Remedy for family harmony

Light a ghee lamp before Lord Shiva and pray for the well-being of every family member, including those with whom disagreements exist.

Chant:

Om Gauri Shankaraya Namah

Avoid praying for another person to be controlled or punished. The intention should be peace, understanding and healthy boundaries.

Remedy for removing negativity

Clean the home altar, light incense or a lamp and chant Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya 21 times.

This practice may be followed by decluttering the home, resolving pending communication and limiting exposure to situations that repeatedly create emotional disturbance.

Remedy for students and concentration

Offer water to Lord Shiva and chant the Rudra Gayatri Mantra 11 or 21 times.

After the puja, begin a focused study session. The prayer should be supported by regular revision, proper sleep and disciplined preparation.

Remedy for spiritual growth

Observe silence for at least 15 minutes after completing the puja. Meditate upon the qualities associated with Lord Shiva:

  • Detachment

  • Fearlessness

  • Compassion

  • Self-control

  • Simplicity

  • Truthfulness

  • Inner stillness

This is one of the most meaningful Sawan practices because it shifts the emphasis from receiving material rewards to developing spiritual awareness.

Sawan Somwar Fasting Rules

The form of fasting may vary according to family tradition, health and personal capacity.

Common fasting options include:

Nirjala fast

No food or water is consumed for a specified period. This is a highly strict practice and should not be attempted by anyone for whom it may create a health risk.

Phalahar fast

Fruits, milk, nuts, coconut water and permitted vrat foods may be consumed.

One-meal fast

The devotee eats one simple sattvic meal after completing the evening puja.

Simple vegetarian discipline

Those unable to fast may avoid heavy, processed or non-vegetarian food and instead observe the day through prayer, charity, self-control and simple vegetarian meals.

Common vrat foods include:

  • Fruits

  • Milk and curd

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Sabudana

  • Samak rice

  • Kuttu flour

  • Singhara flour

  • Potatoes

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Makhana

  • Sendha namak

Regional and family rules differ. Devotees should follow a sustainable practice rather than competing with others or causing harm to their health.

People taking insulin or certain diabetes medicines should speak with their healthcare team before fasting because meal changes may require monitoring or medication adjustments.

What to Avoid on Sawan Somwar

Devotees commonly try to avoid:

  • Anger and harsh speech

  • Dishonesty and gossip

  • Wasting food, milk or water

  • Intoxicating substances

  • Cruelty towards people or animals

  • Stale or damaged puja materials

  • Disrespecting another person’s religious practices

  • Treating the fast as a competition

  • Expecting rituals to replace practical responsibility

  • Making promises that cannot be fulfilled

The true spirit of Sawan lies not merely in external offerings but in cultivating patience, kindness, discipline and humility.

Can Sawan Somwar Puja Be Performed at Home?

Yes. A simple Sawan Somwar puja can be performed at home using a Shiva image or a properly maintained Shivling.

Clean water, a lamp, Bilva leaves and sincere mantra chanting are sufficient. An elaborate Rudrabhishek should be performed only when the devotee understands the procedure or has guidance from a knowledgeable priest.

Can Women Observe Sawan Somwar Vrat?

Yes. Women and men may observe Sawan Somwar vrat according to their faith, health and family tradition.

There is no need to undertake an extreme fast. Devotion, prayer, charity and self-discipline remain more important than physical hardship.

Customs concerning menstruation differ across families and communities. Each person may follow their conscience, health requirements and established family tradition without judging another devotee.

Can Unmarried People Keep Sawan Somwar Vrat?

Yes. Unmarried devotees commonly observe the vrat while praying for a compatible life partner, emotional maturity and a harmonious married life.

However, the prayer should not be used to control a particular person. A healthier sankalp is to seek a relationship based on mutual respect, consent, compatibility and shared values.

Is It Necessary to Offer Milk to the Shivling?

No. Milk Abhishek is a traditional practice, but it is not compulsory. Clean water offered with sincere devotion is sufficient.

When milk is used, only a small quantity should be offered. Wastage should be avoided, and temple regulations should be followed.

How Many Times Should Om Namah Shivaya Be Chanted?

The mantra may be chanted:

  • 11 times for a short daily practice

  • 21 times during morning prayer

  • 108 times as a complete mala

  • Continuously during Jalabhishek

There is no need to become anxious about numbers. Focused chanting performed with sincerity is more meaningful than mechanical repetition.

When Should the Sawan Somwar Fast Be Broken?

The fast may generally be concluded after the evening puja, Shiva aarti or according to family tradition.

Some devotees eat one sattvic meal in the evening, while others conclude the fast the following morning. Local customs differ, so the practice followed within the family or spiritual tradition may be respected.

Sawan Somwar 2026 offers devotees an opportunity to slow down, turn inward and reconnect with the qualities represented by Lord Shiva—fearlessness, transformation, compassion and inner silence.

Whether one observes a complete fast, performs Rudrabhishek, offers a single Bilva leaf or chants Om Namah Shivaya for a few minutes, the spiritual value of the practice lies in sincerity.

The most powerful Sawan remedy is not an expensive offering or complicated ritual. It is the willingness to release negativity, act responsibly, forgive where possible and move through life with greater awareness.

Har Har Mahadev!
