How to Perform Ganesh Puja on Ganesh Chaturthi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Ganesh Chaturthi, is one of the most beloved Hindu festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha — the remover of obstacles, giver of wisdom, and harbinger of prosperity.

Performing Ganesh Puja at home is a beautiful way to invite Bappa’s blessings into your life. If you are wondering how to do it correctly, here is a step-by-step guide for Ganesh Chaturthi Puja.


🌅 Preparations Before the Puja

📿 Items You Will Need (Puja Samagri)

  • Clay or eco-friendly Ganesh idol (avoid POP idols)

  • A clean wooden chowki (platform) covered with red or yellow cloth

  • Kalash (copper/brass pot) filled with water, topped with mango leaves & coconut

  • Akshat (rice grains), Haldi (turmeric), Kumkum, and Sandalwood paste

  • Durva grass (21 blades), fresh flowers, betel leaves, and garlands

  • Incense sticks, camphor, diya (lamp with ghee/oil)

  • Fruits, modaks, laddoos, and sweets for offering

  • Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar mixture)

  • Aarti thali with bell


🕉️ Step-by-Step Ganesh Puja Vidhi

1. Ganesh Sthapana (Placing the Idol)

  • On Ganesh Chaturthi morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.

  • Place Lord Ganesha’s idol on the decorated chowki facing east or north.

  • Sprinkle Gangajal on the setup to purify the space.

2. Sankalp (Prayer Resolution)

  • Join hands and take a vow to perform Ganesh Puja with full devotion for the wellbeing of your family.

  • Mention your name and family’s gotra.

3. Kalash Sthapana

  • Place the Kalash near the idol as a symbol of creation and auspiciousness.

4. Avahan and Dhyana (Invocation & Meditation)

  • Light the diya and incense sticks.

  • Close your eyes, chant “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”, and meditate on Lord Ganesha’s form.

  • Invite Him to reside in your home during the puja days.

5. Offerings (Naivedya & Puja)

  • Apply haldi and kumkum on the idol.

  • Offer Durva grass, flowers, and garlands.

  • Place modaks, fruits, and sweets before Him.

  • Offer Panchamrit and sprinkle a few drops on the idol.

🌊 Ganesh Visarjan

  • On the last day (Anant Chaturdashi or as per family tradition), perform a final Aarti.

  • Chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!”

  • Immerse the idol respectfully in water (eco-friendly) or symbolically in a bucket if immersion in rivers is not possible.
